Beware What Targets You Set for Your Team

Because to them, the target is like horses’ goggles that blind them to everything else.

Hence especially earlier on, It’s important to remember what do you actually want from them with any particular task and then designed their targets to achieve that specific thing only

If you want them to create a blog post they will do it and they will give you a blog post

But if you want them to develop an understanding and use that understanding to create the blog post… Then,

1. First design the targets that will help them to develop that understanding
2. Once you know that they have understood what they need to or at least they’re on the right track that’s when you can give them the blog post target

If you skip a step, then they skip a step as well, and the whole point of the exercise is lost! Essentially

you have to teach them to walk before asking them to run
